Blast at Verka plant leaves worker dead, five injured | Ludhiana News - The Times of India

Ludhiana: A tragic boiler blast at the Verka milk plant on Ferozepur Road late Wednesday night claimed one life and left five others seriously injured. The deceased, Kunal Jain (42), a resident of Haibowal and a boiler attendant, grade one, succumbed to his injuries at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). The injured -- Kulwant Singh, Puneet Kumar, Ajit Singh, Davinder Singh, and Gurtej Singh -- are currently under medical care and reported to be out of danger.According to Ashwani Kumar, in-charge of Raghunath police post, the blast was caused by gas build-up in the air heater unit, which led to a fire. The fire brigade responded swiftly and managed to extinguish the flames. SHO, Sarabha Nagar, sub-inspector Aditya Sharma, confirmed that Kunal Jain was among the six injured and later died during treatment. The incident has also raised questions over why workers were present at the plant on Vishwakarma Day, a day when most industrial units remain closed. Police officials declined to comment, citing it an internal matter of the company.Outside the plant, family members and friends of the deceased gathered, demanding accountability and compensation. Sudhir Jain, a close friend, revealed that Kunal had been attending a birthday party when he received a call from the plant manager asking him to check the boiler. Hours later, the family was informed of his death.Another friend, Satbir Singh, highlighted that Kunal was a permanent employee, while his wife works at the plant on a contractual basis. He urged the government to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure full support for the bereaved family.A Verka plant official described Kunal as a dedicated employee and confirmed that a technical team has been constituted to investigate the cause of the blast. The findings of the inquiry will be shared once the report is complete. The incident has not only left a family grieving but also raised serious questions about industrial safety, emergency response, and operational decisions during holidays. Further investigations are on.
