Panaji: State govt has announced that it will engage a third party to evaluate the grade of freshly extracted iron ore at mines, aiming to collect accurate royalty and premium on the average sale price determined by the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM). This decision comes as the directorate of mines and geology (DMG) currently lacks a laboratory to assess ore grades.Director of mines and geology, Narayan Gad, said the IBM fixes different prices for iron ore grades ranging from 45Fe to 51Fe. He added that the mines department collects premium and royalty based on these grades.Geologists from the mines department presently visit mines to collect samples, which are then sent to a laboratory for grade assessment, Gad explained."Mining companies also submit their grade report, and after the grade report of the mines department and the mining company is compared, the royalty and premium are collected on the highest grade," Gad said.He further informed that the department has submitted a proposal to state govt to establish its own laboratory. Until the new facility is operational, the department will outsource the grade assessment to a third party.Since 2022, only 25% of mineral blocks auctioned by state govt have commenced operations. Out of three auctions for 12 iron ore mineral blocks, activities have started at just three blocks. Goa has also resumed the export of freshly extracted iron ore, with the first consignment recently reaching China.After a six-year shutdown, Goa's mining industry relaunched operations on April 4, 2024, with Vedanta Sesa Goa beginning fresh extraction of ore at the Bicholim mineral block I. State govt has also decided to develop a mechanism to allocate maximum production limits for auctioned mineral blocks, adhering to the Supreme Court's set limit of 20 million tonnes for export from the state. Additionally, the handling of low-grade iron ore will commence in the state as the DMG has granted final approval to Chowgule and Company Pvt Ltd to handle three lakh tonnes of low-grade iron ore located outside mining leases at Shirgao, with a premium of 22%.
