Hyderabad: A local court has issued an interim order restraining online garments outlets, digital media outlets, YouTube channels, and other entities from using the name, titles, images, and photographs of actor and former politician Konidela Chiranjeevi for commercial purposes, thereby protecting his personality rights.In the last few years, several celebrities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Rajini Kanth, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Kumar Sanu, Arijit Singh, Asha Bhosle, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Karan Johar, and Akkineni Nagarjuna have approached courts seeking similar relief to protect their personality rights.City civil court, Hyderabad, chief judge S Sasidhar Reddy granted an ad-interim injunction in favour of Chiranjeevi last month. The court's decision was in response to a petition filed by Chiranjeevi, seeking to safeguard his personality and publicity rights from unauthorised commercial exploitation.Chiranjeevi alleged that several entities, including online platforms and retail stores, had been using his image, voice, and associated titles such as "Mega Star" and "Chiru" without his consent. He claimed that these unauthorised uses caused him significant social and economic harm, tarnishing his reputation and leading to potential financial losses.The court's order on Sept 26 restrains the respondents, which include a range of businesses and digital platforms, from further infringing on Chiranjeevi's rights. The injunction specifically prohibits the use of his name, image, voice, and any other attributes identifiable with him for commercial or personal gain without his authorisation. The court emphasised the potential irreparable harm to Chiranjeevi's reputation and the balance of convenience favouring the granting of the injunction.The 34 defendants have been ordered to cease the use of Chiranjeevi's personality attributes immediately. The court has set the next hearing for Oct 27, 2025, where further proceedings will determine the case's outcome.
