Noida: A Jewar farmer was issued a notice by the agriculture department after a satellite detected a fire on his land on Oct 20. The blaze was initially flagged as stubble burning, but a physical inspection the following day found it was garbage being burned, not crop residue.Deputy director of agriculture Rajeev Kumar said the farmer had burnt some garbage, including minor agricultural waste. "Though not stubble burning, the notice was issued as a precaution under the district's intensified farm fire monitoring drive," he added.Satellite used for monitoring farm fires uses thermal sensing to detect fire. In some cases, it misinterprets solar radiation from solar panels and garbage burning as crop fires. So far this year, no confirmed stubble-burning cases have been reported in the district, compared to 22 during the same period last year. Until last Nov, the number of crop residue burning cases went up to 38, the highest in five years. The administration had imposed fines and filed two FIRs against repeat offenders.Authorities credit the reduction to awareness campaigns, village-level vigilance and regular field inspections. Monitoring teams operate at gram panchayat, nyaya panchayat, block and tehsil levels, with satellite surveillance and daily Centre-issued bulletins. Officials said up to Rs 15,000 environmental compensation could be imposed on crop residue burners -- Rs 2,500 for less than 2 acres, Rs 5,000 for 2-5 acres and Rs 15,000 for over 5 acres. Nodal officers have been assigned for every 50-100 farmers to ensure compliance with preventive measures.
