Fresh snowfall in HP's higher reaches triggers a dip in mercury | Chandigarh News - The Times of India

Shimla: The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh received a fresh spell of snowfall, while some parts of the high and mid hills recorded light rainfall on Wednesday as the mercury dipped in the high-altitude areas of the state.Tabo in Lahaul Spiti was the coldest place in Himachal.It snowed in most parts of Lahaul Spiti, including Koksar, Sissu, Jispa, Gondhla, Tandi, and Keylong, as well as in the high mountain passes, including Rohtang, Baralacha, and Shinku La. It also snowed at the north portal of the Atal Tunnel. However, all the roads in Lahaul Spiti, including the Manali-Leh national highway, remained open for traffic.According to the Lahaul Spiti police, the roads, including Koksar to Palchan to Manali via Rohtang Pass; Darcha to Shinku La; Darcha to Sarchu to Leh; and Udaipur to Tindi, remained open. The Koksar to Lossar road also remained open but only for 4X4 vehicles.Snowfall was also recorded in the high-altitude areas of Kinnaur, Chamba, and Kangra districts.Meanwhile, nearly 250 sheep and goats were reported dead after getting buried in an avalanche that struck the Jarasu Pass in Chamba district of the state. The incident occurred last Friday but has come to light now.According to information, the shepherds were returning to Kangra, and while crossing the treacherous Jarasu mountain pass in the Holi area of Bharmour in Chamba district, an avalanche struck, burying the goats and sheep even as the accompanying shepherds had a narrow escape.Two shepherds, who suffered frostbite due to a prolonged stay in the snow and a sudden dip in the mercury, were rescued by the locals from the nearby villages.According to the India Meteorological Department, the weather will remain clear and dry till Oct 28.On Wednesday, Tabo in Lahaul Spiti recorded the lowest minimum temperature of -0.7ºC.
