Punjab '95 Controversy: Diljit Dosanjh has been awaiting the release of his highly controversial film for a couple of years now. The film has been completed and kept on hold for longer than expected due to several reasons. It was recently announced that the biopic will skip India and will be released internationally without any cuts on February 7, 2025, but has been postponed yet again indefinitely. Dosanjh took to his Instagram stories on 20th January mid-night and wrote, "We are sorry and it pains us to inform you that Punjab '95 will not release on 7th Feb due to circumstances beyond our control." The movie's release is halted majorly due to its ongoing issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This delay is part of a year-long struggle for the film which is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. CBFC has requested almost 120 cuts to the film which explicitly explores Khalra's fight to expose the killings of Sikh youth by the Punjab Police in the 1990s. Just a week before the scheduled release, Diljit released a trailer, which quickly gained over 300,000 views in just 20 hours. However, the trailer was removed from YouTube in India, with users seeing a message that it was unavailable in their country. This fueled more controversy around the censorship issues eventually making the makers take a back seat until they have a green signal legally. For the unversed, Punjab '95 has the support of Jaswant Singh Khalra's wife, Paramjit Kaur Khalra, who strongly opposes the proposed cuts. She believes the film should be shown as it was made, with no changes, to honour her husband's story accurately. The film also shows Khalra's abduction and murder by the Punjab Police in 1995 which has become a sensitive nerve for CBFC.
