Berhampur: Further intensifying the probe into the murder of senior lawyer and BJP leader Pitabas Panda in Odisha's Berhampur, police have reportedly picked up former MLA Bikram Panda for questioning in connection with the sensational case. As per sources, a police team, led by Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) Saravana Vivek M visited the residence Bikram Panda, who is also BJD's Ganjam district president, late at night and took him into custody for interrogation. Over ten persons are now stated to be under the police scanner, while two suspected shooters have reportedly been brought from outside the state. Meanwhile, Berhampur police have also detained a youth from Puri who had been absconding since the murder. Acting on a tip-off, a special team tracked his location near the seashore and nabbed him. A pistol, reportedly hidden in the sand, was also recovered. However, police have not made any official statement about this development so far. Police said multiple angles are being investigated. They are probing matters relating to property disputes, loan dealings, and professional rivalry. Over the past 15 days, police have questioned more than 80 individuals and examined over 500 CCTV footage clips, as well as the deceased's call detail records (CDR). The probe also indicated the possible involvement of several prominent local figures, including a student leader and a corporator, pointing towards possible political motives. It may be noted that Pitabas Panda, a member of the Odisha State Bar Council, was shot dead by unidentified assailants near his residence at Brahmanagar under Baidyanathpur police limits on October 6. He sustained bullet injuries on his chest and was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
