Kolkata: While the city was busy celebrating the Diwali-Kali Puja festival on Monday night, doctors across many hospitals in the city were busy tending to patients with burn injuries caused mostly by firecrackers. From adults to children, the emergency wings of these hospitals saw a trickle of injured festive revellers. While most were lucky to escape with minor burns, a few patients were admitted as they needed further treatment.Between Sunday and Monday night, Belle Vue Clinic already treated eight patients after they sustained injuries while lighting up firecrackers. They had burn injuries, mostly on their hands."On Sunday night, we got three burn cases, while the number went up to five on Monday night, mostly children. Luckily, these were minor burn cases that could be managed in the emergency wing itself without having to admit," said Belle Vue Clinic CEO Pradip Tondon.The parents of an 11-year-old girl from Jadavpur rushed her to Manipal Hospital EM Bypass after the child's lower apparel caught fire from a spark of a firecracker (rang mashal). While a quick reaction from parents prevented a major burn, she sustained minor burns on both legs, for which she might need plastic surgery on one of her legs."In yesterday's Diwali celebrations, our emergency department attended to over 10 cases of burn injuries in a single day, mostly caused by firecrackers. While most of these were minor burns and patients were discharged after prompt emergency care, a few cases required hospital admission," said Nishant Agarwal, consultant and head of emergency services, Charnock Hospital.A young woman from Alipore is getting treated at CMRI for burn injuries she sustained after her sari caught fire from a lit-up diya. "We admitted this young lady on Monday night as she sustained 20% injury on her back and arms. There were also a couple of firecracker-related burn cases, but they did not need treatment under admission," said senior plastic and vascular surgeon Anupam Golash of CMRI.Some adults too sustained burn injuries. Among those who needed emergency treatment at Ruby General Hospital included a 60-year-old man from a nearby high-rise apartment and a man in his 30s from the Kasba locality. "These patients could be discharged as the burns turned out to be minor," said Subhashis Datta, chief general manager (Operations) at Ruby.
