Thiruvananthapuram: The Tamil Nadu-based man who was arrested for allegedly raping a woman IT employee staying at a hostel room in Kazhakkoottam on Friday committed the crime during a theft attempt, said city police commissioner Thomson Jose on Monday. Meanwhile, the survivor, who is 25 years old, identified the accused, Benjamin, 38, a native of Madurai. Benjamin owns a truck and was the driver of the vehicle too. The crime took place when he arrived at Kazhakkoottam carrying cargo.The probe team said the accused is a habitual offender and used to steal items during all his arrivals in the state capital. Police have begun collecting the details of the cases registered against him at various police stations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and are examining his involvement in unresolved theft and other cases in the state.The accused reportedly stole an iPod and Rs 500 from a nearby hostel before entering the hostel in which the woman was staying. Seeing its front door open, the accused entered the building and tried to open the rooms but only the door of the survivor's room remained open. Giving up the idea of stealing something, he raped the woman by using force and also covered her mouth to prevent her from raising alarm. After the crime, the accused escaped from the scene and drove to Attingal, where he reached a service centre. He was in a hurry to service his vehicle, which led to a quarrel with the staff there, police said.The probe team examined hundreds of CCTV visuals to identify the accused, and the visuals at the service centre proved crucial. After identifying the registration number, the probe team contacted Madurai police. When they reached Madurai, the truck was seen parked on the roadside and he was contacted to move the vehicle from there. Seeing police, he ran away and the probe team members had to run after him for over a kilometre before capturing him adventurously, the probe team members said.The fingerprints, DNA of the semen samples, tower location, etc. will remain crucial evidence in the case, the officers added.A court at Attingal has remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.
