Gandhinagar: Studies conducted by the Gujarat govt project that the state's domestic water requirement is expected to increase by over 30% by 2030 and more than double the existing requirement by 2050. Studies conducted by the state govt have recommended that Gujarat might face yet another spell of water crisis in the coming years, especially for domestic purposes, if water resources are not enhanced proportionally.The state faced a continuing water shortage crisis for several years until the completion of the Sardar Sarovar project. Completion of the Narmada dam and a majority of the branch canal network placed the state in a better position as far as water requirements for various purposes are concerned.According to the recent study conducted by the state's water resources department, the water demand in 2024 stood at 8,804 MLD (million litres per day). This demand is expected to increase by 32% to 11,642 MLD in 2030. Compared to the water demand of 2024, the water demand is expected to increase by 114% to 18,927 MLD by 2050.The Gujarat govt has not yet made industrial and irrigation water demand data available; however, key officials informed that along with domestic use, demand for industrial as well as irrigation is expected to increase by over 30 to 40% by 2030. "This will create a situation where the govt will have to augment presently available water resources and create new water supply avenues," an official said.As per the available official data, the water demand of Ahmedabad district, which is presently pegged at 1,484 MLD, is expected to shoot up to 1,913 MLD by 2030. Surat has a 1,229 MLD demand at present, which is expected to jump to 1,589 MLD. Rajkot has a 524 MLD requirement, which is expected to jump to 680 MLD. As per the official data, all the districts are expected to witness a massive jump in water demand by 2030 and touch over 100% of the present need by 2050.Sources said, "Revision of the Narmada water tribunal is ongoing, and if the state does not get increased allocation of Narmada water, it is likely that Gujarat could face a crisis in meeting growing water demand. There is an urgent need for a comprehensive state water supply policy considering all types of water demands in order to avoid any chaotic situation in the near future."
