Kolkata: Hours after the sensational heist of French crown jewels from the Apollo Gallery in the iconic Louvre Museum in Paris, authorities at the Indian Museum took stock of the security at the largest museum in India by size of collection, which includes various types of jewellery and ornaments. Victoria Memorial Hall, the most-visited museum in the city, will also conduct an audit of the security on Tuesday.Speaking to TOI, Indian Museum director Arijit Dutta Choudhury said he held a meeting with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officers and asked them to review the security, identify possible vulnerable points, and take steps to address them."After the theft of eight priceless royal pieces of jewellery from the Louvre, all museums will be reviewing their security. We have told everyone -- CISF and our security staff -- to take additional precautions. Security staff deployed in the galleries will be vigilant during operation hours. Guards on patrol will be alert after museum hours. I have asked them to ensure that all CCTVs are functional and the feed is properly monitored in the control room," said Choudhury.Thieves broke into the Louvre around 9.30 am. They did so from the outside using a furniture lift to access a window of the Apollo Gallery on the first floor. The gallery contained Napoleonic jewels, including three historical diamonds -- the Regent, the Sancy, and the Hortensia. A video clip taken by a visitor has emerged showing a suspect cutting through the display case while visitors walked by.Incidentally, the last high-profile theft from the Indian Museum, a 5th-century Buddha bust, also took place when the museum was open. The theft occurred between 11.30 am and 1.15 pm on Dec 29, 2004.The Indian Museum has a collection of precious jewellery, ornaments, and rare artefacts that are stored in the museum vault. The collection includes a Lord Ganesha pendant, waist ornaments, a necklace made of shell rings, a pair of lotus-shaped earrings from Nepal, a pair of brass earrings, and jewellery from the Tagore household."The Indian Museum has valuable coins on display in a cabinet that is specially designed with bullet-proof glass. The opening mechanism of the cabinet is also special and can be opened only by someone who has knowledge about it," said Choudhury.At Victoria Memorial Hall, the most visited museum in Kolkata, director Anurag Kumar said the threat was somewhat different. "Here, more than the artefacts, it is the building that faces the terror threat. While we seal the entrance and exit every evening, it is perimeter security that is being heightened. Apart from the 300 CCTV cameras that are there, 150 more are being installed. The control room is manned 24×7," he said.The store that contains invaluable artefacts is away from the public eye and has special security. Unless there is insider involvement, Kumar is confident thieves cannot gain access to the vault. "We will, of course, do a review in the wake of the Louvre theft," Kumar added.
