Srinagar, Oct 19: Ahead of Diwali celebrations and the upcoming Darbar Move, security has been tightened across Jammu to ensure peace and public safety, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Joginder Singh said on Sunday. Addressing a press conference, SSP Singh stated that the police are fully prepared to counter any threat posed by hostile elements and have taken all necessary precautions to maintain law and order during the festive season and the administrative transition. "We are alert and ready. Police, Army, BSF, and paramilitary forces are working in close coordination to ensure peaceful Diwali celebrations and the smooth conduct of the Darbar Move next month," he said. Referring to the security situation, Singh said that despite significant gains against terrorism over the decades, threats persist, particularly from across the border. "We have been fighting terrorism for 30 to 35 years. The enemy (Pakistan) has been defeated in five wars, but continues to foment trouble by pushing terrorists and drugs. The situation demands constant vigilance," he added. The SSP confirmed that security arrangements have also been made for the smooth reopening of government offices in Jammu as part of the Darbar Move, a biannual tradition recently reinstated by the administration led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The age-old practice, first introduced by the Dogra rulers in 1872 and scrapped by the Lieutenant Governor's administration in 2021, will see offices in Srinagar closing on October 31, with reopening scheduled in Jammu the following month. "Given the increased public movement due to Diwali and the Darbar Move, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or unclaimed object to the nearest police station," Singh said. The SSP emphasised the importance of public cooperation in ensuring a safe and secure environment. "Peace has largely prevailed in recent years, but anti-national elements continue to look for opportunities to create unrest. We seek public support to foil any such attempts," he said. He also appealed to citizens, especially landlords, to complete tenant verification formalities, particularly in cases involving migrant workers or outsiders. "Tenant verification is a crucial preventive measure. We urge all residents to comply," Singh said, adding that there is no cause for panic, but caution is essential.
