Patiala: Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) leader and former MP, Prem Singh Chandumajra, on Sunday urged both the central and state govt to provide adequate compensation to farmers hit by poor paddy yield due to the recent floods. He said the low paddy yield should be classified as a natural calamity. Although the Centre recognised flood damage as a severe calamity, he added, the combined impact of floods, the bona virus, and haldi disease has caused a 40-50% drop in paddy yield, leaving farmers in severe financial distress.He urged the Punjab govt to deploy teams to grain markets (mandis) to assess the losses from reduced yields, prepare reports, and compensate farmers accordingly.Furthermore, Chandumajra stated that if the Punjab govt fails to address the issue with the Centre, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) delegation would meet the Union agriculture minister to demand a special relief package for Punjab.He pointed out that the reduced paddy yield is impacting every farmer, labourer, commission agent (aarhtiya), transporter, and sheller owner, emphasising that the Punjab govt must address the issue seriously.Additionally, Prof Chandumajra appealed to the central govt to relax the minimum support price (MSP) norms to facilitate smooth paddy procurement.
