Gorakhpur: Just 15 km from Gorakhpur city, deep inside the Kusmhi forest, Van Tangiya villagers of Jungle Tinkonia No. 3 are waiting eagerly for arrival of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. For a week now, air in the village is filled with excitement and devotion -- after all, Diwali for them begins only when their 'Yogi Baba' lights the first lamp in their homes.Preparations are in full swing, houses being cleaned, walls painted and courtyards decorated as villagers gear up to welcome the Chief Minister on Oct 20. Despite living in forests for over a century, they had no citizenship rights, housing, or access to welfare schemes -- and lived in constant fear of eviction.All that changed when Yogi Adityanath, then MP, took up their cause in 1998. He introduced education and healthcare to their settlements, established mobile medical units and even faced legal battles to set up the Gorakhnath Hindu Vidyapeeth school, which stands today as a symbol of his struggle for their rights.In 2009, Yogi began the tradition of celebrating Diwali with Vantangiyas, gifting sweets, books and firecrackers to children and development schemes to the community. As CM, he went a step further -- granting them revenue village status, ensuring roads, housing, electricity, schools, water supply and pensions reached every household.Today, the once-neglected forest villages have been transformed.
