New Delhi: None of the safety equipment worked when a fire broke out at Brahmaputra Apartments in Lutyens' Delhi on Saturday afternoon, eyewitnesses and residents of the complex claimed.Manu, who lives on the second floor, said he was standing at the main gate when he saw thick smoke rising from the parking area. "We rushed to the spot and saw the fire. We tried to use the fire safety equipment and started the pump, but there was no water supply. If it worked, we might have been able to prevent some of the damage," he said.Sumit, who stays on the third floor, pressed the fire alarm button as he rushed downstairs, but none of the alarms worked. "Even fire extinguishers were not working," he alleged. The Central Public Works Department, however, claimed that all fire-fighting systems installed in the building were operational and used to contain the fire before the arrival of fire tenders. The automatic sprinklers were not provided in the stilt area as per National Building Code 2016, it added. Residents also claimed fire tenders took nearly 35-40 minutes to reach the spot. However, the fire department denied the allegation, stating that fire tenders from the two nearest stations, Rakabganj and Connaught Place, reached the complex promptly.Several residents were seen frantically calling their relatives and friends to inform them that everyone was safe. Some residents sat silently, still in shock, while others were seen consoling their neighbours who have lost their belongings. Many residents said they had lived here for several years. With no immediate option, they were clueless about where to take shelter now. Some of the flats were decorated ahead of Diwali, with electric lights and diyas while festive decorations adorned balconies and common areas. In minutes, all of it turned into ashes.Among the injured were two sisters, Madhu (19) and Jeevika (15), who live on the third floor. Their mother, Lali, works at an MP's residence in the same complex. "We had stored jewellery and other items for Madhu's wedding in March 2026. Everything has been destroyed," said Lali. Jeevika just returned from school when the fire broke out.Ansh, who lives on the second floor, was celebrating his 15th birthday on Saturday. The family planned a small celebration with friends in the evening, but now everything is gone, said his mother, Preeti.Meeta, who also lives on the same floor, said her flat was gutted. "My husband, two children and I left everything behind and ran to save ourselves," the 42-year-old said.
