Gurgaon: A large number of people flocked to the cracker godowns and shops of Gadoli on Saturday following the Supreme Court's order permitting the use of green crackers.The influx caused traffic jams early in the morning, and by 8 AM, the tailback of vehicles reached up to Umang Bharadwaj Chowk. Crowds had started gathering in front of the three licensed warehouses in the area from midnight. The court permitted only three days for the sale of the crackers. As a result, people wanted to buy stock as soon as possible.Not just from the city, but buyers from Delhi had also arrived to buy firecrackers. There were long queues in front of the warehouses since morning. For security reasons, the operators could not open the gates.People had to wait till 2PM. The surge in the number of buyers led to chaos. The operators had to take the help of the police and bouncers to control the crowd. People were allowed entry only in groups of five. No prior security arrangements had been made, due to which chaos continued for hours, and traffic was also affected.The crowd and the narrow window for the sale also hiked the prices. Customers were shocked to learn the prices. People alleged that warehouse operators were taking undue advantage of and selling firecrackers at four times the price.Sandeep Sinha, a resident of Sector 50, said firecracker traders are selling sparklers worth Rs 200 for Rs 500. Due to high prices, even those who waited in lines for six to seven hours were forced to buy firecrackers only in limited quantities. "Many people returned empty-handed due to excessively expensive firecrackers," he said. He alleged that this kind of act amounts to black marketing, and the administration should pay attention to it.Traders told TOI that they had very limited time to get the stock, and a large quantity of green crackers was not available as there was uncertainty before Diwali. "We are selling on MRP and this time not offering any discount," said a trader.Firecrackers were available in Kadipur and Farukhnagar as well. Temporary shops were, however, absent from local markets due to the short notice required for obtaining a temporary firecracker licence. In some city areas, crackers were sold without a licence, although discreetly.
