Kolkata: The EC on Saturday sought reports from district magistrates (DMs) on complaints they have received on appointment of booth-level officers (BLOs). The DMs are expected to submit their reports next week. The commission sought the reports after allegations surfaced that some BLOs had been appointed without following EC norms and that some of the appointees were politically exposed. BJP had earlier alleged that some of the BLOs are members of the governing party in the state. The EC, in order to steer clear of controversy ahead of the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter rolls, has sought these reports from DMs and has also asked them to verify BLO appointments. The commission has also directed district administrations to urgently appoint BLOs so that they can receive mandatory training.Bengal typically needs 80,000 BLOs for elections in the state. However, with the number of polling booths going up ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, the number of BLOs is also expected to increase. An EC official said a section of BLOs submitted a memorandum to Bengal CEO Manoj Agarwal on Thursday about their threat perception. Agarwal said the situation would be reviewed once the SIR exercise begins.
