Margao: Following the death of Ponda MLA and agriculture minister Ravi Naik, Priol MLA and former minister Govind Gaude on Saturday suggested that Naik's son Ritesh be elected unopposed to fill the vacant seat. Gaude described this as a fitting tribute to the late politician's legacy and his numerous contributions to the state.Naik's passing has necessitated a bypoll in the Ponda constituency. Gaude emphasised the importance of honouring Naik's memory by ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of his work through his family. "Ravi Naik dedicated his life to the service of the people of Goa." It is only fitting that we honour his legacy by supporting his family during this difficult time," he said.The appeal has drawn mixed reactions from political parties. While some leaders have expressed support for the proposal, others have raised concerns about maintaining the democratic principle of allowing voters to make their own choice.
