MUMBAI: A delegation of citizens representing Aamchi Mumbai, Aamchi BEST and other organisations met BEST general manager Sonia Sethi on Friday. They demanded that the undertaking immediately stop selling (monetising) its land holdings to private builders in the name of generating "non-fare revenue." Hussain Indorewala, co-convenor of AMAB, said that in the name of "cutting losses," BEST increasingly brought in private contractors, doubled bus fares recently from a minimum of Rs 5 to Rs 10, reduced the bus fleet, and thereby deepened the crisis - and it is the ordinary Mumbaikar who is paying the price."BEST has declared that it wants to transform itself into a feeder service for the Metro and trains. This is a disastrous decision. Buses are a critical mode of public transport in themselves. We are not aware of any city in the world where buses are run solely as feeder routes," he said while presenting his views at a discussion with Sethi at BEST headquarters on Friday.When contacted, Sethi said that BEST was open to discussions with activists, unions, and citizens' groups. "We are also open to revisiting our past decisions. The group which came to meet me on Friday represented some of the citizens' perspectives. My job is to ensure there is a balance between citizens' requirements along with including a culture of efficiency within the undertaking," she said, while adding that the morale of BEST staffers was boosted on Friday after they received the Diwali bonus.Vidyadhar Date, convenor from AMAB, said: "We have demanded that the GM makes efforts for bus service to be restored to maintain a fleet of at least 6,250 BEST-owned buses (as per the norm of 1 bus per 2000 population). Wet leasing should be discontinued immediately. Instead, BEST must purchase and operate its own buses as it did before."A petition from AMAB said: "The central and state govt subsidy to buy electric buses under the FAME-2 policy must be made applicable to BEST, so that BEST can purchase its own buses. The fare hike should be immediately rescinded and restored to the earlier levels. BEST budget should be merged with the BMC budget, and the latter should take the responsibility of giving financial support."Indorewala added: "We demand that the routes, particularly long routes, that were cancelled or curtailed should be restored."
