Panic in Una school as lion wanders on playground - The Times of India

Rajkot: Panic swept through Gayatri Vidyalaya, a private primary school, in the coastal town of Una in Gir-Somnath district, on Friday morning when a lion leapt over the boundary wall and wandered inside the sprawling campus for several hours, feasting on a calf. The incident took place early in the morning at the school, located on the road leading to the union territory of Diu.With around 400 students scheduled to arrive later, staff members who were already present were stunned to see the lion sauntering on the school ground. Realizing that driving away the feline would be a long haul, they immediately halted students from entering and declared a holiday for the day. The lion eventually made its way to the school building, even climbing a staircase toward the entrance, while teachers and staff members watched in fear from inside. School authorities contacted the forest department, and a team from the Jasadhar range arrived to handle the situation. They successfully managed to drive the lion into a mango orchard about 700 meters away, said assistant conservator of forest, Kapil Bhatia. As teachers arrived at their usual time, they were shocked to see the lion roaming freely across the campus. In response, they locked themselves in classrooms and kept the students outside. This is not the first time that wild animals have ventured onto the school premises. Leopards have previously been seen jumping over the high compound walls, but this was the first recorded instance of a lion appearing on the campus. Gir-Somnath, which borders Junagadh, the abode of the Asiatic lion, is known for its significant lion population, and sightings of these majestic animals in nearby villages and roads are pretty common.
