Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued scholarships to over 10 lakh students on Friday. The move is significant as it marks a departure from the system of issuing scholarships to almost 60 lakh students in one go, which was usually delayed as govt used to wait for details of all students to be verified before disbursing the funds. From next year, govt aims to complete the distribution in two phases, giving out funds as and when a significant number of verifications is completed.Govt issued over Rs 300 crore to 10,28,205 students through direct benefit transfer (DBT). The CM announced that scholarships will now be distributed twice a year, in Oct and Jan, so that students receive timely assistance. "The initiative aims to support talented students and remove financial barriers in their education, marking another milestone in the double-engine govt's mission for educational empowerment. In 2016-17, only 8.64 lakh students benefited from scholarships. Today, that number has increased to 62 lakh," he said. Drawing a comparison between the situation under his govt and under the previous govt, the CM said that before 2017, the scholarship process was plagued by bias, delays and corruption. Now, a technology-based DBT system has been adopted to send funds directly into the accounts of eligible students. "Before 2016-17, previous govts stopped scholarships to SC/ST students. Our govt restored it," he said.The CM said that over 3.56 lakh students from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes received Rs 114.92 crore, more than 97,000 students from the general category received Rs 29.18 crore, 4.83 lakh students from other backward classes received Rs 126.69 crore, and 90,758 students from the minority community received Rs 27.16 crore as scholarships through DBT."No eligible student in the state will be left without a scholarship. For those who missed out last year due to institutional lapses or technical issues, the portal has been reopened. Once data entry is complete, these students will also receive their scholarships via DBT in a special ceremony. Our goal is simple: no student in UP should be deprived of education. Every student must have the opportunity to pursue their dreams," he said.Mentioning Dr BR Ambedkar, the CM said that Baba Saheb believed that it was only through education that one could achieve self-reliance and contribute meaningfully to society.
