Pune: A total of 3,079 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be up and running in different parts of the state by Nov this year, state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik told TOI.However, with Maharashtra being second highest in the country for EV registrations, only behind Uttar Pradesh, the number of charging stations is still very low and a constant reason for concern among those owning EVs, highlighted experts."At present, state govt has set up 1,180 high-speed EV charging stations, and this number will go up to more than 3,000 by Nov. We are trying hard to strengthen EV-related infrastructure in the state to achieve the aim of 30% of all new vehicle registrations being EVs by 2030," Sarnaik told TOI.Earlier this year, state govt came up with its EV policy, which consisted of many aspects, including setting up of charging points every 25km of every major highway, including fuel stations and MSRTC bus depots. State govt said it will enter into MoUs with oil companies for the same, and all MSRTC bus depots will have space for public EV charging stations.Sarnaik added, "In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), some ST depots have already got EV charging points. We are working towards this at other depots too. People planning to buy EVs in Maharashtra have a concern about fewer charging points."A total of 5.69 lakh EVs are registered in the state right now. "EV charging stations being set up by state govt are in addition to those set up by private parties. Roughly, we can say that total charging stations must be more than 3,000. However, more are needed, and state govt needs to work faster than right now," a transport department official told TOI.As per the Bureau of Energy Efficiency website, Maharashtra has 3,836 public charging stations. The website states that UP, which has more than 11.55 lakh registered EVs, has just 2,999 public charging stations. On the contrary, Karnataka, which has just over 4.75 lakh registered EVs, has 5,871 public EV charging stations.Rajeev YSR, an EV expert and CEO of Thunderplus Group, said inadequate infrastructure is a major roadblock. "One of the biggest barriers to EV adoption is lack of adequate charging infrastructure. Globally, there is one public charger for every 15 EVs, whereas in India, the ratio is one for 300 -- discouraging growth. With larger batteries and faster charging needs, public fast chargers are critical, especially as many high-rises restrict home charging. Yet, hidden costs make projects unviable: 40% of setup cost goes to power infra, largely demand charges, deposits, and supervision fees. Waiving or subsidising these and enabling PPPs on govt land like bus depots and railway stations can instantly improve viability and accelerate nationwide charging expansion," he told TOI.Arun Siya, MSRTC's divisional controller in Pune, said the plan to set up EV charging infrastructure at Swargate depot is on hold at the moment. "Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) asked us to wait till the monsoon is over. Underground cables have arrived, but if we start digging now, commuters will face issues. However, until now, there is no plan to set up charging stations in other depots in Pune," Siya told TOI.Koregaon Park resident Jayant Badwe, who bought an EV four-wheeler recently, said that for longer rides to Mumbai, he still uses his diesel car. "I don't have the confidence, even with my EV said to run for 250km after getting fully charged. The expressway does have charging stations, but I have heard that some are out of order many times. State govt needs to work faster, which isn't happening," the businessman said.
