Mumbai: India's Southwest Monsoon 2025 has recently concluded with "above normal" rainfall -- or 108% of the long-period average (LPA) -- with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region registering 20% more than the season's average. In Mumbai, suburban Mumbai, which has Aarey and the national park in its backyard, received the second highest surplus rainfall after Palghar, and was followed by Raigad and Thane (see box).An analysis by Climate Trends shows five out of the past 10 seasons have registered above normal rainfall. Around 45% of the country's landmass experienced extreme rainfall this time, said the report, while highlighting how climate change is reshaping the Indian monsoon, driving fewer rainy days but more intense rainfall events. Western and northern Maharashtra together witnessed 20% surplus rain followed by 39% in the Marathwada region and 14% in Vidarbha, both known for drought-related suicides. Extreme rainfall events have tripled in India since 1950, triggering devastating floods. Meteorologists and scientists have cited increased moisture in the region for the rainfall. This is the second consecutive year in the past decade to record above normal rain and climate change has a critical role in higher rainfall, the report said. In the past 10 years from 2016 to 2025, five years registered above normal rainfall, two years normal rain and three years below. Experts attribute changing rain dynamics to global warming's growing dominance over traditional monsoon drivers like El Nino and La Nina.The findings are significant as India experiences more localised flooding, landslides, and river surges -- even in regions dormant for decades. In the core monsoon zone, which mainly comprises central India, too, most states recorded excess rainfall. Gujarat registered the highest in the region with 25% excess, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. While all districts in each state recorded normal to above normal rainfall, 18 out of 36 districts registered excess to large excess rainfall in Gujarat, as did 17 out of 36 districts in Maharashtra, and 22 out of 52 districts in Madhya Pradesh.The IMD classifies 'normal' monsoon with rain between 96-104% of the LPA and over 104% as 'above normal'. "The number of rainy days has decreased, but the quantum has increased," said K J Ramesh, former director general, IMD. "Not just extreme rainfall events, there has also been a rise in cloudburst-like conditions too," said Mahesh Palawat, VP, meteorology and climate change, Skymet Weather. "We are seeing lots of secondary western disturbances forming in the wake of western disturbances," said Dr A P Dimri, director, Indian Institute of Geomagnetism.
The weather body also issued an orange alert for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad.
