New Delhi: As the countdown to Diwali and the long weekend begins, Delhi's roads are bursting at the seams. On Thursday evening, the city glowed not just with fairy lights but also with endless rows of brake lights stretching across major corridors.Connaught Place, Mathura Road, ITO, GK, Lajpat Nagar and long stretches of the Ring Road near AIIMS and on the Outer Ring Road towards Gurgaon and Noida; all glowed red on Google Maps. Around 5.15 pm, travel time from central Delhi to Noida hovered around an hour and a half, while the drive to Gurgaon stretched beyond two hours. Even within the city, routes like Dhaula Kuan, Sardar Patel Marg, Rajouri Garden and Vikaspuri took close to an hour to navigate.For residents, the frustration was palpable. "I just had to cover 1.2 kilometres -- from the Mathura Road right turn to ITO -- but it was a nightmare," said Ishika, who was stuck at the signal for over half an hour. "Even with the cops on duty, the signal time was long. It took me 40 minutes to cover 1.2 km. Even ambulances were stuck."A traffic cop on duty at the same spot said, "When the traffic at the signal ahead moves, then only, we can release traffic from here."Mahesh, who was driving from India Habitat Centre towards Connaught Place, said wrong-side driving made the situation worse. "The biggest menace was people driving from the wrong side," he added.Social media, too, was flooded with complaints. "Heavy traffic jam at Najafgarh-Nangloi Road, Baprola Village. Both ways packed, please do the needful," posted one user on X. One commuter fumed, "Delhi romanticisation over -- stuck in Diwali traffic between Noida and Gurgaon. Noida: Liquor revenue in the city jumped by 35% in the first quarter of 2025-26 compared to the same period last year.
