Pune: The civic body's plan to set up 82 public charging points in different parts of the city remains incomplete after two years. This is despite the fact that among all cities in Maharashtra, EV registrations in the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) are the highest, standing at a little over 96,000. Under PCMC, more than 52,000 EVs are registered.Manisha Shekatkar, head of the PMC electrical department, said that till date, only 44 charging points have been set up. "We are facing some issues with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) regarding power supply, and hence there has been a delay. But more importantly, the points that are already set up are also not getting a good response. We are studying more options for the rest of the charging stations," she said.As per the plan, customers are charged Rs13-19 per unit for charging at the points.Pravin Sathe, a Kondhwa resident who owns an EV two-wheeler, said that he prefers charging his vehicle at home. "There is no specific reason for it. But I haven't really come across these EV charging points in the city yet. If there are only 44 such points, they must be hard to spot. I have seen some charging points at petrol stations. This infrastructure needs to be increased in the city," he said.Dhruv Ruparel, president of the Petrol Dealers Association Pune, said that while there were 970 petrol stations in Pune district, those with EV charging points are few. "I cannot give an exact number, but it is minuscule. In my fuel station at Bhairoba Nala, charging points were set up by an oil company two months ago. But the power connection is pending, so the points are not yet operational," he said.Sangat Dixit, who owns an EV two-wheeler, said, "I had a bad experience in Pune, when I went to at least three places in different petrol pumps for EV charging, but all were out of order. Now, I make it a point to charge at home. Regarding PMC's charging points, I haven't seen any.
