Ranchi: Thousands of tribal community members, led by the Adivasi Bachao Morcha, gathered at Prabhat Tara Maidan in Dhurwa on Friday to oppose the ongoing demand of the Kurmi community for its inclusion into the scheduled tribe (ST) list.People from all age groups from 24 districts of Jharkhand gathered at the state capital carrying their traditional flags, weapons such as arrows and bows, and other cultural paraphernalia to assert their identity and raise anguish against the rising demand by the Kurmis.In Ranchi, a march was organised from Bapu Vatika in Morabadi to the Prabhat Tara Maidan, leading to massive traffic snarls on the route. Tribal leaders addressed the community members gathered at the ground from across the state, and raised their voice against the demand raised by the Kurmis.Bablu Munda, president of the Kendriya Sarna Samiti, termed the demands raised by the Kurmis, pointing to the differences in rituals followed by both the communities."There are no cultural similarities between the adivasis and Kurmis, which make them ineligible for ST status.
