Kolkata/Darjeeling: CM Mamata Banerjee on Thursday urged tourists to visit Darjeeling in large numbers, assuring them that they can visit the majestic Hills "without fear" and reminding them that while two roads to the Hills are fully functional, another will be ready in the next 15-20 days."I urge tourists to come to the mountains," she said after offering prayers at Mahakal Temple in Darjeeling.Banerjee said she met and personally spoke to several tourists in Darjeeling about their experiences. "The tourists have started coming. I met several tourists. In the recent past, after the floods, it stopped for a while. During the floods, the police and administration led by the DM and SP took responsibility and rescued many tourists. About 1,500 tourists were evacuated to safety during that period. Many are still coming. Both roads are open now, one through Tindharia and the other through Pankhabari. The road through Rohini will be ready in the next 15-20 days. I request tourists to come here," she said.The CM added that a temporary bridge was being constructed at Dudhiya, which will be completed in seven days. Additionally, a permanent bridge would also be built. "For now, a footbridge has been set up," she said.After rain and landslides on Oct 4-5, Darjeeling district's connection with the plains was practically cut off for the past few days. Many roads, bridges and culverts were damaged. With work in full swing, the repairs have been mostly completed or are nearing completion on several roads and vehicles have started moving.Currently, two roads from Darjeeling to Siliguri, Hill Cart Road and Pankhabari Road, are open. Tourists are allowed to descend towards Sukna via Tindharia on Hill Cart Road. It is expected that by Diwali, the remaining roads will also be suitable for traffic, making travel easier for tourists.
