Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominee Rajinder Gupta was elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed and was issued the winning certificate on Thursday. Earlier, the election process was marked by an unusual turn of events with three independents, including now-arrested Janata Party president Navneet Chaturvedi, filing their nomination papers, all of which were rejected.After the scrutiny of nominations on Tuesday, only two candidates - Gupta and his wife, Madhu Gupta - were left in the fray. She withdrew her candidature on Thursday, paving the way for Gupta's entry to the Upper House.With family wealth of Rs 5,053.03 crore, Gupta, an industrialist, will be among the richest Rajya Sabha MPs. He declared his family-owned moveable property worth Rs 4,338.77 crore and immoveable property worth Rs 615.74 crore. Initially, three independent candidates also filed their nominations, all of which were rejected during scrutiny. They included Navneet Chaturvedi, who sparked a controversy with his revised nomination submitted on Oct 13, claiming to have secured signatures of 10 AAP MLAs as proposers. The MLAs accused Chaturvedi of forgery, resulting in the rejection of his nomination and subsequent arrest on the basis of an FIR registered in Ropar on a police complaint by AAP MLA Dinesh Chadha.The other two independent nominations were filed by Prabhakar Dada from Sangli in Maharashtra and Kantee Sayanna from Hyderabad, but without any MLAs proposing their names.An official said Gupta was declared "elected uncontested" to the Rajya Sabha.With Gupta's election, AAP's representation in the Rajya Sabha from Punjab has risen to seven members.
