Thiruvananthapuram: Unnikrishnan Potti, the prime accused in the Sabarimala gold theft case, was taken into custody by the special investigation team (SIT) for detailed interrogation. The team reached his residence at Pulimath early Thursday morning and took him into custody. He is currently being questioned at an undisclosed location in Thiruvananthapuram. It is not yet clear whether his formal arrest has been recorded, but police sources indicated that it is likely to follow soon.The interrogation focuses on the theft of gold from the panels of the dwarapalaka (guardian) idols and the kattilapadi (door-frame) structures at Sabarimala. It is reliably learnt that the investigation revealed Potti allegedly handed over the stolen gold to a Bengaluru-based man identified as Kalpesh. The SIT is said to have obtained crucial information regarding Kalpesh's involvement. Investigators have also gathered information from Smart Creations, Chennai, the firm that carried out the electroplating work , regarding the gold sponsored by Potti.Potti had been questioned several times earlier by the devaswom vigilance in connection with the gold theft. His mobile phone was reportedly switched off since Wednesday.The SIT initiated the questioning after gathering substantial evidence and witness statements. Potti is the first accused in one of the two cases registered in connection with the theft. Other accused include former administrative officer Murari Babu, former TDB secretary S Jayasree, former Thiruvabharanam commissioners K S Baiju and R G Radhakrishnan, former executive officers D Sudheesh Kumar and V S Rajendra Prasad, assistant engineer K Sunil Kumar and former administrative officers S Sreekumar and K Rajendran Nair.Parallel inspections are also being carried out at Sabarimala, where officials are verifying files and records from the executive office. The ongoing interrogation is expected to reveal the exact quantity of gold misappropriated by Potti. Kerala high court has set a six-week deadline for the SIT to complete the probe.Meanwhile, state BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Thursday that if devaswom minister V N Vasavan fails to resign, his party would request the Centre to initiate a CBI or ED probe into the gold theft.
