Mumbai: State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S Chockalingam has forwarded a joint representation of opposition parties demanding a short Special Summary Revision (SSR) and carrying out de-duplication in electoral rolls before the local body polls to Sanjay Kumar, deputy election commissioner, Election Commission of India (ECI).In his letter, Chockalingam said that since Supreme Court directed the State Election Commission (SEC) of Maharashtra to complete the election process of local bodies before Jan 31, 2026, the suggestions of major political parties may be brought to ECI's notice for necessary appropriate directions.A delegation of opposition leaders, including NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, and Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat, along with others, met Chockalingam on Tuesday and then met state election commissioner Dinesh Waghmare to submit a memorandum."The delegation alleged that there are several errors such as duplicate names and errors in the address/age of electors in the electoral roll being used by SEC. They also claimed that as electoral rolls of assembly constituencies in Maharashtra were not published after the general election to the legislative assembly elections held in Oct 2024, political parties or the public did not get the opportunity to file claims or objections to modifications/corrections carried out in electoral rolls," Chockalingam said."Persons completing 18 years of age up to Jan 1, July 1, and Oct 1, 2025, could not be included in the electoral rolls as SSR with respect to the qualifying dates was not declared by ECI so far. Hence, the delegation has demanded taking a short SSR with respect to Oct 1, 2025, as a qualifying date before holding local body elections....They also requested that de-duplication be carried out in the electoral rolls of all assembly constituencies to verify and delete duplicate voters," he said in the letter. He added that the joint representation, along with samples of errors in electoral rolls submitted by the delegation, was enclosed with his letter.
