Mumbai: Two newborns, born just a few blocks apart, one at KEM Hospital and another at Wadia Hospital, were left waiting for two days this week for O negative blood donors. Both infants needed urgent transfusions. Messages calling for donors circulated widely, and the babies were eventually saved.Dharmendra Yadav, the father of the infant admitted to Wadia Hospital, said, "My son was born with multiple complications. He underwent surgery soon after birth and needed blood. We were struggling, but eventually, the hospital managed to arrange it by Wednesday."In their case, the challenge was finding a donor with a negative blood group, one of the rarest types. Experts warn that such emergencies will become increasingly common in the weeks ahead. In November, Mumbai's blood banks will face a sharp decline in supply unless more people turn up at upcoming donation camps.This impacts emergency cases as planned surgeries move ahead. "During the holiday season, many people travel and very few donate," said Dr N. Naidu from the Indian Red Cross Society's city branch.Every year, Mumbai faces shortages from October through November, and sometimes even into December. A blood bank officer from a BMC-run hospital said Mumbai currently has surplus stock, collected during a BJP-led donation drive from September 17, which marked PM Narendra Modi's 75th birthday, until October 2.However, this surge has had unintended consequences: much of the excess blood could expire within weeks, as most components have a shelf life of about 35 days.Under normal circumstances, the city's daily demand is 1,000 to 1,400 units of blood, but this dips during the festive season as planned surgeries are postponed. Currently, it has 9,057 units in stock, which officials say will start expiring by October 22.The donors who gave blood during that drive cannot donate again for another three months. "That's why spontaneous donation camps can do more harm than good. Blood collection needs to be planned, phased, and continuous," the officer said.While the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC) is trying to redirect excess stock across Maharashtra to under-supplied districts, including Bhandara, Gondia, Nandurbar, Hingoli, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Gadchiroli, and Wardha, there is no clear plan yet for managing potential shortages in the coming month.At KEM Hospital, a blood bank official said, "We're organising donation camps, and those who wish to donate can contact us. But if people don't come forward, there's only so much we can do."
