New Delhi: A ceasefire deal has been agreed upon between Israel and Hamas. News agency AP reported this based on two officials involved in the deal, although their identities have not been disclosed. The negotiations for this agreement were held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, with the assistance of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. Israeli officials stated on Monday, January 13, that in the first phase of the deal, 33 hostages will be released. Hamas currently holds 94 hostages from Israel. Hamas took 251 Israeli citizens hostage on October 7, 2023. The remaining hostages were released earlier. The final discussions for the deal took place on Tuesday, 14 January 2025. Once this agreement is signed, it will be implemented immediately. The first phase of the ceasefire will last for 42 days. The remaining hostages will be released 15 days after the release of the 33 hostages. During this period, discussions will also take place regarding the permanent implementation of the ceasefire. Palestinian citizens will return to North Gaza. According to a CNN report, the ceasefire deal will allow Palestinian citizens displaced from North Gaza to return to their territories. However, the presence of Israeli soldiers may remain in the area for security reasons. A buffer zone will be created between Gaza and Israel. Both Israel and Hamas have different demands regarding the buffer zone. Israel is demanding a 2 km buffer zone from the border, while Hamas wants a buffer zone of 300 to 500 meters, like it was before October 7, 2023. On the other hand, Israel has refused to return the dead body of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar under the deal. The US Secretary of State said the responsibility for advancing the ceasefire will lie with Donald Trump, which is why his representative has been included. Donald Trump, who will be sworn in as the president of the USA on January 20, commenting on the deal, stated that "we are very close to finalizing the deal. If they (Hamas) do not agree to it, they will face more problems".
