New Delhi: Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Wednesday said the city was ready to carry out cloud seeding. A four-day flight trial has been completed by two pilots who will execute the operation in northwest Delhi and they are awaiting IMD's green signal to induce artificial rain, he added."Our special aircraft is stationed at Meerut. The pilots completed four successful trial flights over the target area. We are simply waiting for the right cloud conditions and India Meteorological Department's approval. If conditions permit, the first trial can be held the day after Diwali or soon after," Sirsa said.Cloud seeding is a weather modification technique that enhances a cloud's ability to produce rain. The project will be conducted by IIT Kanpur, which will operate a specially modified Cessna 206H aircraft equipped to seed clouds with silver iodide and other particles. They trigger microphysical changes in moisture-laden clouds, encouraging the formation of ice crystals or raindrops.According to IIT Kanpur scientists, nimbostratus clouds, which form between 500 and 6,000 metres above ground level and contain at least 50% moisture, are most suitable for seeding. Officials said govt had planned five cloud-seeding trials, all in northwest Delhi, to assess feasibility under varying moisture conditions. "We also plan to test post-seeding water samples to ensure there is no harmful environmental impact," an official said.Delhi govt signed an MoU with IIT Kanpur on Sept 25. Directorate General of Civil Aviation had cleared the project the day before and allowed trials anytime between Oct 1 and Nov 30. The two pilots are experienced commercial aviators with over a decade of experience.The Delhi cabinet approved the Rs 3.21-crore project on May 7. Initially planned for May-end and June, the trials were delayed due to the monsoon and rescheduled for Aug-Sept. However, persistent rain pushed the plan further. Last month, Sirsa indicated possible trial dates between Oct 7-11, but unseasonal rain caused by a western disturbance delayed the operation again. "We are fully prepared -- now only the sky needs to cooperate," he said.
