Hyderabad: This year, women make up about 36% of the passing-out batch from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) -- the highest in the institution's history, said Amit Garg, director of the academy. The national police academy will hold its Dikshant Parade on Oct 17, marking the successful completion of Phase I training. Garg revealed that a total of 190 officer trainees, including 174 IPS probationers and 16 foreign officers from Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives, would receive their certificates in the ceremony."Last year, the percentage of women was 29%, and it has increased every year. The proportion of male officers, on the other hand, dropped from 79% to 71% last year and has fallen further still to 64% this year," he noted. Of the 174 IPS probationers, 112 are men and 62 women, who form 64% and 36% respectively.Having completed their foundation course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, the 77th Regular Recruits (RR) batch joined the SVPNPA on Dec 9, 2024. Since then, they have undergone 45 weeks of Phase I training. The probationers will now proceed to Delhi for a series of attachments and visits to key institutions, including the Central Police Organisations (CPOs), the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training (BPST)."They will also undergo attachments with the CRPF and the Indian Army. This combined attachment period will span four weeks, bringing the total duration of Phase I training to 49 weeks. After this, the officers will undertake 29 weeks of district practical training in their respective cadres or states," Garg explained.The director added that the academy is witnessing a shift in the academic profiles of trainees. While fewer engineering graduates are joining, more candidates from arts and law backgrounds are now entering the civil service.Elaborating on the academy's evolving training approach, Garg introduced the new 'SMART' module: Sensitive, Modern and Mobile, Accountable and Alert, Responsive and Reliable, and Technologically proficient. "These key areas are the focus of our modules to ensure our officers are well-prepared to serve society effectively," he said. In response to changing times and the evolving challenges of policing, the SVPNPA has also incorporated subjects such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, behavioural sciences and mental well-being into its training curriculum.
