Nagpur: Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited (LMEL), the company that operates an iron ore mine and is setting up an integrated steel plant in Gadchiroli, is open to offering a job to Maoist leader Bhupathi alias Sonu as its brand ambassador. The company has also expressed readiness to employ all the 50-odd Maoists who surrendered on Wednesday.LMEL sees Bhupathi as a potential candidate to spread the message of new dawn of development in the district, which was only known as a Maoist hotbed so far.LMEL managing director B Prabhakaran told TOI that already 70 surrendered Maoists are working with the company, apart from 1,400 odd workers coming from the interior areas, which were once known as a stronghold of the rebels. "With his strong faith in the Maoist ideology and the subsequent surrender, Bhupathi can become an ideal candidate to spread the message as a brand ambassador," Prabhakaran told TOI.LMEL is ready to accommodate all the other Maoists who have surrendered as well. It shall wait for the no-objection certificate (NOC) for the govt and offer them jobs after that. This marks a significant change for LMEL too. This is the first company to have started mining operations in the district. However, the company faced stiff opposition from the Maoists for over a decade. The rebels also killed one of its senior officials, but are now being offered jobs here."They will be provided jobs according to their skill and education. People like Bhupathi will certainly get jobs that require skills in line with their calibre," said Prabhakaran. It takes around a year for the surrendered Maoists to take up an alternative vocation. For around six months, they are interrogated by the police and are kept in camps with little contact with the outside world. Then follows the process of opening their bank accounts and the creation of other credentials. After that, the Maoists appear before a nodal committee, which finally clears their case, explained a Maoist who has gone through the process.LMEL also sees some technically skilled personnel in the lot that has surrendered. "Among those who laid down their arms are some who headed the weapon-making factories and are well-versed in handling machinery. We plan to channelise their knowledge into the plant's manufacturing activities," said a source."Gadchiroli superintendent of police Neelotpal has been proactive in framing a flexible rehabilitation policy," said Aseen Rajaram, a surrendered Maoist who also works with the company. "The company plans to start their training in the camps after six months so that they are ready for the new jobs and step into the mainstream," he said.
