Kochi/T'puram: St Rita's Public School, Palluruthy, on Wednesday rejected the report submitted by the deputy director of education (DDE) Ernakulam which found "serious lapses" by the school in allegedly denying an eighth-standard student entry to class because of wearing a hijab.The school, which opened after remaining closed for two days, termed the report "false and misleading" and said it had sufficient evidence to prove its position. Education minister V Sivankutty, who had directed the school in strong terms to allow the girl to continue wearing the headscarf, however, softened his stand on Wednesday and said that the hijab row ended with the parents of the student and school management reaching a consensus."It would be good to have a consensus at the school level. If there is a consensus, it should be resolved there. However, an explanation will be sought from the management. No one has the right to deny education," said the minister.School principal Sr Haleena Alby said the student was not expelled but remained on the school rolls. "It was the assistant education officer who met all stakeholders. We have not removed the child. The school is functioning strictly as per the court's directions and will continue to follow institutional rules. The issue is before the court, let the law take its course," said the principal.Citing a 2018 Kerala high court verdict, Sr Haleena said that the uniform policy was to be decided by school managements. She added that the school may move the high court against the action initiated by the education minister.The minister said that the govt would not allow compromising the freedom of religion and freedom of expression in any schools and would not allow the schools to become religious flashpoints. He reminded that the school management will have to give an explanation on the notice by the education department. He reminded that even though it is an unaided school, the NOC will have to be issued by the state govt.The school's legal advisor, Vimala Bindu, said the state govt could not arbitrarily cancel the no-objection certificate required for CBSE affiliation as minister stated."An NOC can be cancelled only on specific grounds such as violation of state laws or mismanagement. The minister's statement threatening cancellation is improper. Educational institutions should not be forced to adopt a particular position," she said.The minister said Ernakulam MP Hibi Eaden and PTA members mediated to end the crisis that evolved in the school and the govt was in no way part of these mediatory talks.
