Jaisalmer: Mahendra Meghwal, a defence serviceman from Setrawa in Phalodi district, recently appointed to the Jaisalmer Ordnance Depot after his father's death, was on his way back home with his family to celebrate Diwali when the bus he was travelling on burst into flames.Meghwal, his wife Parvati, daughters Khushi and Diksha, and son Shaurya, perished in the accident.While the nation has condoled the accident that claimed 21 lives, Meghwal's mother, Garidevi, ailing and aged mother remains unaware of the tragedy that has befallen her family. Villagers, fearing for her health, have not broken the news to her. Preparations for the last rites of the five-member family have overwhelmed the entire community, even as it awaits the return of Mahendra's elder brother Jagdish from Oman, where he is employed.Relatives have, meanwhile, taken Mahendra's sister to Jodhpur for DNA sampling to help identify the remains.Also among the victims of Tuesday's catastrophe was senior journalist Rajendra Singh Chauhan, who was on his way to Pokhran to inaugurate a medical shop. He was accompanied by Manoj Bhatia, president of the Jaisalmer Chemists Association.Bhatia survived the accident with serious injuries, while Chauhan died at the scene. He is survived by his wife and two young sons, both in school. The family, already mourning the loss of both of Chauhan's parents in recent years, now faces an additional, inconsolable loss.The accounts of survivors of the accident are as harrowing as the stories of the dead.Peer Mohammad, who was seated at the rear of the bus, survived but was unable to rescue two children travelling with him despite desperate attempts. He kept voicing his profound anguish at his inability to save the children repeatedly to his brother during the ambulance ride to Jodhpur.Bus conductor Rafiq was nothing short of a hero, who did not stop trying to help passengers escape the flames despite sustaining serious burn injuries. He finally managed to break the door open, saving several lives in the process.Despite efforts by the Army and civilian administration to establish a 'green corridor' for those injured in the accident, several survivors and relatives have expressed frustration about the poor condition of ambulances and delays in medical assistance.Ashish Dave and his fiancée Vishakha, who were returning from a pre-wedding photo shoot and were seated at the front of the bus, managed to escape within minutes of the fire breaking out. His brother-in-law, Amit, was grateful that the couple survived the accident, even though Ashish is experiencing problems with his vision.Their wedding, scheduled for Nov 11, will now bear scars of this terrible tragedy.Pokhran resident Nathu Singh reported that his nephew, Mahipal Singh of Ram Nagar, had boarded the bus to sit for an Air Force exam. He was severely burnt in the accident and admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Jaisalmer.Singh, who travelled from Pokaran to be with his nephew upon receiving the news, recounted how Army personnel provided significant assistance at the scene.As villages mourn and families cope with unimaginable loss, the Jaisalmer bus tragedy comes as a poignant reminder of just how swiftly joy can descend into sorrow and leave lasting wounds on individuals, families, and communities.

Jaipur/New Delhi, July 9 (UNI) An IAF Jaguar trainer aircraft crashed today killing both pilots, near Bhanuda village in Ratangarh sub-division of Churu district in Rajasthan. Hyderabad: Swetcha Votarkar, a 40-year-old Telugu television anchor, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Hyderabad on Friday night.
