Ahmedabad: Satyamev Jayate International School in city's Bopal has banned its girl students from wearing leggings under their skirts, triggering strong protests from parents, who gathered on the school campus on Wednesday demanding the rule be withdrawn. The issue drew the attention of the district education officer (rural), who issued a show-cause notice to the school management. Ahmedabad (rural) DEO B N Prajapati said, "The DEO's office had received complaint from parents regarding school prohibiting girls from wearing leggings. The principal has defended the move saying that leggings is not part of the dress code. However, considering the sentiment of the parents, I have directed my education inspector to visit the school and probe the matter," Prajapati said.Parents allege that senior girl students often have to sit on the floor and interact with boys during group activities. Wearing leggings ensures comfort and modesty, they said. Until recently, leggings were allowed as part of the uniform, but over the past 10 days, the school reportedly forbade the use of leggings. Students wearing them were allegedly made to stand aside and even threatened with disciplinary action, sources said. The school management defended its decision, stating that students must strictly adhere to the prescribed uniform, which includes a short skirt but does not officially include leggings. The management said the matter will be reviewed following parents' representation.
