Amritsar: Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj on Wednesday visited Koulpur village in Jammu's Samba district, where a man had allegedly set five saroops of the Guru Granth Sahib on fire. Gargaj, who checked the site of the incident, termed the incident of desecration, which took place on Tuesday night, as "extremely shameful and painful". Gargaj also announced action against the management committee of the gurdwara, declaring that all office-bearers and members of the committee, along with their family members, would be permanently barred from holding any managerial position in any gurdwara in future.Addressing the local community, Gargaj emphasised that every gurdwara must have 24-hour security and committees should focus not on positions of power, but on selfless service. He warned that any negligence in this regard would be dealt with strictly, as previous directives from Akal Takht had already made such guidelines clear.A release issued by the Akal Takht secretariat informed that administrative officials, including deputy commissioner Ayushi Sudan and DIG Shiv Kumar Sharma, also reached the scene.Since the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a middle-aged Sikh man. Police said the alleged "sacrilegious act" was carried out by Manjit Singh alias Billa. He allegedly used some inflammable oil to set ablaze the holy text late Tuesday night, sparking widespread protests by the Sikh community, a police officer said. An FIR had been registered under relevant legal provisions and further investigation was going on, cops said.Jammu IG Shiv Kumar Sharma appealed to the Sikh community to cooperate with police and not listen to rumours.A delegation from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) was dispatched to Samba for an on-ground investigation. The team included SGPC members Gurmeet Singh Booh, Ajaib Singh Abhiasi, and secretary Partap Singh. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami demanded that the Indian govt bring stricter laws to punish those guilty of sacrilege and called for exemplary punishment to deter future incidents. The SGPC delegation also conveyed to local authorities that no action should be taken against any Sikh involved in demolishing the accused's house and all those responsible for the sacrilege. The burned saroops have now been sent to Gurdwara Sri Goindwal Sahib as par rehat maryada (Sikh code of religious conduct).
