India summons Bangladesh's top diplomat; says all border protocols observed

New Delhi: India on Monday summoned Nural Islam, Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, to discuss the escalating border tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka. It was conveyed that with regard to security measures at the border, including on fencing, India observed all protocols and agreements between the two governments and between the Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh, officials informed. "India reiterated its commitment to ensuring a crime-free border by effectively addressing the challenges of cross-border criminal activities, smuggling, movement of criminals and trafficking. Barbed wire fencing, border lighting, installation of technical devices and cattle fences are measures for securing the border," an official said, adding, "India conveyed its expectation that all earlier understandings will be implemented by Bangladesh and that there will a cooperative approach to combating cross-border crimes." On Sunday, the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma following allegations that India was attempting to construct fences at five specific locations along the 4,156 kilometre Indo-Bangladeshi border. The current interim regime has alleged that some boundary agreements reached between India and Bangladesh under Sheikh Hasina are against interests of Dhaka and therefore must be annulled. Bangladesh home affairs adviser, who headed the border force when BNP was in power between 2001 and 2006, is known for his hardline stand on border issues. According to Bangladesh Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the conflicts have surfaced in five areas, including (northwestern) Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat, and the Tin Bigha Corridor. Following his meeting in Dhaka on Sunday, Verma said, "I just met the foreign secretary to discuss India's commitment to ensuring a crime-free border, effectively addressing challenges of smuggling, movement of criminals and trafficking. We have an understanding with regard to fencing the border for security. BSF and BGB have been in communication in this regard. We expect that understanding will be implemented and there will be a cooperative approach to combating crime."
