AIDSO opposes extension of school holidays for survey work in Karnataka

The All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) has taken objection to the extension of holidays in schools in Karnataka to facilitate the completion of the Social and Educational Survey. "The State government has extended holidays for government and aided schools for the purpose of the Social and Educational Survey. This move is undemocratic. There is no doubt that it will pose an obstacle in providing quality education to the children in government and aided schools. Also, there is a serious concern about the emergence of a severe disparity between private schools and government schools with regards to this step," the AIDSO said in a statement here. The organisation said that school teachers are already handling non-teaching responsibilities and added that reports have emerged that the survey work has become an additional responsibility for the teachers. "If school holidays are extended, teachers will be under pressure to complete the lessons in a shorter time. Moreover, this action undermines the educational stability of government school students. It is regrettable that the school holidays have been abruptly extended without an adequate plan to ensure that the core function of schooling -- teaching and learning -- is not hampered. This also raises fears about a decline in academic results of government school students," it stated. The AIDSO district committee has therefore demanded that the government, keeping in mind the educational future of the children, withdraw the order extending the holidays and take alternative measures for the survey work without sacrificing school time, it said.
