Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Monday launched the much-awaited first phase of the Patna metro rail service at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) depot, delivering a transformative gift to the people of the state. The CM unveiled a plaque for the 'priority corridor', covering three stations -- Patliputra Bus Terminal, Zero Mile, and Bhootnath and also inspected the metro's yard.After the launch, he took a ride on the metro, expressing delight at the milestone. He emphasised that the Patna metro is a significant step towards building a modern, eco-friendly, and efficient transportation system.The project is expected to boost employment and trade while providing residents with a safe, fast, and convenient commuting option, Kumar added. The 3.6-km elevated stretch of the metro line of Corridor-II, which is named 'Blue Line', will be open to the public from Tuesday.Later, at an event held at the Vikas Bhavan, the CM laid the foundation stone for the construction of underground metro stations and tunnels from Rukanpura to Patna Junction, which is a part of Corridor-I (Danapur to Khemnichak via Mithapur). He also performed a ceremonial 'bhoomi pujan' to mark the commencement of this phase."The first phase of the Patna metro connects three stations -- Patliputra Bus Terminal, Zero Mile and Bhootnath. Additionally, work has begun on two underground metro lines: One from Rukanpura to Patna Zoo and another from Vikas Bhavan to Patna Junction," Kumar said.The foundation stone for the Rs 13,365-crore Patna metro project, approved in 2019, was laid by the CM. The first segment includes a 31.9-km metro line, with half elevated and half underground tracks. The project comprises two corridors: Danapur-Mithapur-Patna Junction and Patna Junction-Gandhi Maidan-PMCH-Rajendra Nagar Railway Station-Bairiya bus stand.The inauguration ceremony was attended by deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha; water resources and parliamentary affairs minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary; road construction minister Nitin Nabin; urban development and housing minister Jibesh Kumar and senior officials including principal secretary to the CM Deepak Kumar, chief secretary Pratyaya Amrit, development commissioner S Siddharth, and others.

Lucknow: A man accused of raping a three-year-old girl died in an encounter with Uttar Pradesh police in Lucknow on Friday, a day after a complaint was registered against him.
