Mumbai: With the government enforcing a nationwide ban on real-money gaming (RMG) and unveiling draft rules for the broader online gaming sector, industry players are urging policymakers to redirect attention toward nurturing legitimate video gaming and esports in India. Executives say that with RMG-based platforms now outlawed, the next phase of policy action should prioritise building sustainable, non-monetary gaming ecosystems through fiscal incentives, infrastructure investment, and clearer operating guidelines. They believe that with the right mix of regulation, demographics, and entrepreneurship, India could become a global leader in gaming not just by player numbers but also by innovation. A recent report by Lightbox titled India's Gaming Inflection: Non-RMG at Scale estimated that India had between 419 million and 488 million gamers in 2024, second only to China. Nearly 80% of them are under 35, while mobile gaming accounts for about 80% of total usage. The growth of India's gaming sector has been fuelled by over 560 million smartphone users, affordable mobile data, UPI-based payments, localised content, and a young digital-first population. Sean Hyunil Sohn, vice president at Indian Digital Gaming & Esports Society (IDGES), who is also the CEO of Krafton India, said the government's move to ban RMG brings greater regulatory clarity. "Once the detailed rules are in place, people will have more confidence that the industry is moving in the right direction under a solid framework," he said. "With clear regulation, we expect more investment and new companies setting up in India." Sohn suggested that fiscal incentives could further boost the sector. "Tax incentives, employment subsidies or infrastructure support would show that the government is serious about developing this sector." He cited the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT), a public-private initiative involving the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Maharashtra government, CII and FICCI, as an example of forward-looking policy support. Rajan Navani, founder and CEO of JetSynthesys and president of IDGES, said institutions like IICT can help strengthen the talent pipeline by combining education with practical training. "Our Centres of Excellence aim to connect learning with real-world product creation," Navani said. "That's how India can strengthen its IP base over time." Navani added that several states are framing policies around gaming, AVGC (animation, visual effects, gaming and comics) and extended reality (XR) to tap the sector's job potential. "About 70% of Indians engage with some form of gaming," he said. "From this base of 500 million players, India can build a pool of skilled talent."
