Kalyan: Several parents of Kalyan's Smt K C Gandhi English School's students alleged the school administration has barred students from wearing tilak, bindi, bangles, rakhi and sacred threads. The decision has triggered anger among parents, prompting the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) education department to step in and demand an explanation from the school authorities.In response to the allegations, school director Swapnali Ranade denied the administration had issued any formal order banning religious symbols. However, she defended the school's action by emphasising the need for uniformity and discipline. "Our school has students from diverse castes and religions. If children of one faith begin wearing religious symbols, others may follow suit, which could create divisions. We need clear guidelines to ensure safety and discipline in the school," Ranade said.The matter escalated Wednesday when parents, joined by Shiv Sena (UBT) activists, gathered at the school premises to confront the administration. Parents alleged children who came to school wearing a tilak or bindi were forced to remove it. One parent alleged his daughter was assaulted over the issue. Parents approached Rupesh Bhoir, Sena (UBT) functionary, whose son studies there too. Bhoir escalated the matter to KDMC's education department, which issued a notice to the school, asking for a detailed clarification on the allegations. Bhoir claimed after he lodged his initial complaint last week, another incident occurred in which a teacher allegedly took his son to the washroom and forcibly wiped off the tilak from his forehead. "Is following one's religion a crime in this school?" Bhoir asked.The school's secretary, Manohar Palan, said a memo would be issued against the teacher who allegedly assaulted a student. He said items such as bangles or kada could potentially injure other students during physical activities, which is why such issues are taken seriously. He assured parents the school has some guidelines and "we will study the same and organise a meeting with parents and KDMC officials to discuss the matter in detail and reach a resolution acceptable to all parties".
