Chandigarh: With his reappointment as leader of the opposition (LoP) in Haryana assembly, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda will once again be officially allotted Kothi No 70 in Chandigarh's Sector 7, a govt residence he has continued to occupy since 2019.The house was originally allotted to Hooda in his capacity as LoP. His tenure ended in Oct last year, but despite the delay in his re-nomination, Hooda chose to stay on and never vacated despite disentitlement. While the absence of official sanction raised questions, the move also suggested he was confident of regaining the position.Following the Congress high command's Monday announcement of his appointment, the Haryana govt is now expected to issue a formal notification, after which the chief secretary's office will confirm the allotment. As LoP, Hooda will be entitled to facilities on a par with a cabinet-rank minister.For Hooda, the Sector 7 residence has become more than just an official house -- it has served as his political base in Chandigarh and a symbol of his continuing influence within both the Congress and Haryana's opposition politics. Earlier, the same house was allotted to Hooda in Feb 2015 in the capacity of former CM of the state. At the time, he had organised a massive gathering at the 'grihapravesh' (housewarming) to showcase his clout in the state's politics.However, within a year, he had to vacate the house and other facilities were taken away from him after the then CM Manohar Lal Khattar govt had withdrawn the status of cabinet minister's rank given to the former CMs of the state. The provision of facilities to former CMs equivalent to a cabinet minister were made by Hooda himself during his tenure as Haryana CM in May 2013. The facilities, however, were withdrawn in April 2016. Later, the house was allotted to the then industries and commerce minister, Vipul Goel.However, as the Congress emerged as the state's second largest party in the 2019 assembly elections and Hooda was recognised as leader of opposition, he became entitled to facilities equivalent to a cabinet minister. He had then specially requested for allotment of the same house -- 70, Sector 7 Chandigarh. Since then, it was occupied by him.House No 70 in Sector 7, popularly called as 'Kothi No 70', was considered the power centre of Haryana when Hooda was the CM, as it was occupied by his then principal OSD, M S Chopra, from 2005 to 2014.
