Bathinda: With the southwest monsoon officially coming to an end, even as more rain is expected, northwest India received its highest rainfall since 2001 this year and the sixth highest since 1901. Rainfall in the northwest from June to Sept was recorded at 747.9mm against a long period average (LPA) of 587.6mm -- 127% of the LPA. The southwest monsoon rainfall over the monsoon core zone, which consists of most of the rain-fed agriculture regions in the country, received 122% of the LPA.Punjab recorded 41% excess rainfall during the entire season from June 1 to Sept 30, as it received 621.8 mm against a normal of 439.8 mm. Haryana recorded 33% excess rainfall during the entire season, receiving 568.4 mm against a normal of 426.0 mm. Himachal Pradesh recorded 39% excess rainfall during the season, receiving 1,022.5mm rain against a normal of 734.4mm. Rajasthan recorded 64% excess rainfall.Rainfall during the monsoon over the country as a whole was recorded at 108% of its long period average (LPA), which is considered above normal (104% of LPA), as per the IMD forecast. All India summer monsoon rainfall was 937.2 mm, which is the fifth highest since 2001. Out of the 36 meteorological subdivisions, two subdivisions, covering 10% of the country's total area, experienced large excess rainfall. Twelve subdivisions, constituting 35% of the area, received excess rainfall, while 19 subdivisions, representing 46%, recorded normal rainfall. The remaining three subdivisions, accounting for 9% of the total area, experienced deficient rainfall during the season.Monthly rainfall over the country as a whole was 109% of LPA in June, 105% in both July and August, and 115% of LPA in Sept. The southwest covered the entire country by June 29, earlier than the normal date of July 8. Monsoon withdrawal began on Sept 14, advancing by three days. There were seven monsoon depressions formed during the season, out of which one intensified into the deep depression category. There were 69 low-pressure system days against its normal 55 days.
