Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh mining minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati was injured in an attack inside Lucknow district jail hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, on Tuesday evening. Jail authorities confirmed that Prajapati suffered injury and received three stitches on his head. He was shifted to KGMU later in the night. His condition is said to be stable.According to jail superintendent RK Jaiswal, Prajapati sought water from an undertrial, Vishwas, who was assigned cleaning duty at the hospital. Vishwas reportedly refused to give him water after which Prajapati allegedly abused the inmate."An agitated Vishwas allegedly struck Prajapati on the head with an iron object," a jail official said.While jailer Ritwik Priyadarshi confirmed that Prajapati required three stitches, sources claimed the attack was carried out with a pair of medical scissors used in the hospital. The jail administration denied the use of a sharp object, insisting that no such weapon was involved. The Special MP/MLA Court of Lucknow had convicted Gayatri Prajapati and his two accomplices for life in a gang rape case on Nov 12, 2021. The two other aides of Prajapati, Ashish Shukla and Ashok Tiwari, were also sentenced for life in the same case. Prajapati was arrested in March 2017 by the police. He was shifted from Balrampur hospital to Lucknow district jail about 25 days ago due to health complications and was admitted to the jail hospital at the time of the attack. Officials said an inquiry has been initiated, and inmate has been detained for questioning.
