Lucknow: Lucknow Municipal Corporation has begun sealing 170 acres of land in Gomtinagar, including the iconic Subrato Kothi belonging to the Sahara Group. Boards declaring the area sealed have been installed on the premises.The action follows a detailed inquiry led by Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar, which found multiple violations of licence and lease agreements. The land, allotted to Sahara India Housing Limited in 1994 for residential and green belt development, was supposed to be developed into housing plots and a planned colony.However, the LMC issued a notice in 1997 to cancel the licence deed due to violations, after which the matter became a prolonged legal dispute. Later, as per the LMC, the district court rejected Sahara's claims. Of 170 acres, 130 acres were given for residential and commercial projects under a licence deed, while 40 acres were designated as a green belt on lease. The inquiry revealed that parts of the government-owned land were being misused as private property, risking financial and administrative losses.Following recommendations from legal experts, the LMC cancelled the licence for the 130 acres and revoked the lease for the 40-acre green belt. The property department, assisted by the tehsildar and police, took possession of the disputed land.A senior official said that Sahara City, developed in violation of licence conditions, includes a palatial mansion of Subrata Roy, offices, a stadium, an auditorium, guest houses, a petrol pump, a fire station, a swimming pool, a helipad, a theatre, a hospital, a lake, and club facilities. Residents and employees are being asked to vacate, with only one entry left for municipal staff.Meanwhile, Sahara India Commercial Corporation Ltd. (SICCL) has approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to sell Sahara City in Lucknow, Aamby Valley in Maharashtra, and other properties under a deal with Adani Properties. The hearing is scheduled for October 14. The group aims to recover funds to pay off liabilities and comply with the court orders. So far, around Rs 16,000 crore has been raised from property sales, deposited in the SEBI-Sahara refund account, while Rs 5,000 crore has been released to repay cooperative society depositors.When asked whether the sealed property is also included in the sales appeal, Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar said, "We have not received any such notice from the Supreme Court. Besides, we will file a caveat in the SC to ensure our position is heard first if Sahara challenges the move."
