Jaipur: The pharmaceutical company at the centre of a recent cough syrup scare in Rajasthan allegedly has a history of regulatory compliance issues, which have resurfaced following the death of a five-year-old boy in Sikar district after consuming one of their medicines.The company, Kaysons Pharma, was previously debarred by the state health department for two years due to non-compliance of drug supply contracts. Department officials said the decision stemmed from the company's failure to deliver medicines as per agreements with the Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Ltd (RMSCL).Action against Kaysons Pharma was initiated in Apr 2022 after an RMSCL disciplinary committee found the firm in violation of tender conditions, the officials said. An RMSCL order stated that despite receiving multiple purchase orders, the company either failed to supply or only partially supplied the contracted syrup, leading to its debarment starting June 6, 2022.Following the Sikar boy's death, the health department has launched an investigation into the safety of the company's dextromethorphan-based cough syrup. Several other children in Sikar and Bharatpur districts reported adverse reactions after taking the syrup.The health department Tuesday also collected samples of the syrup from Sikar for laboratory testing. A senior health official said, "We are checking if the drug has any adulteration. Past issues with the company have made us particularly vigilant in this case."The RMSCL imposed an immediate ban on the distribution of the cough syrup in question. The department is also reviewing treatment records and is gathering statements from affected families to piece together the sequence of events.Officials said concerns pertained to specific batches of the cough syrup. "Since June, more than 1.3 lakh patients have received the same cough syrup, but not a single complaint was received before Sept 28," said a senior RMSCL official.On Sept 28, RMSCL received a complaint from the chief medical health officer in Bharatpur regarding batch number KL-25/147 of the drug 'Dextromethorphan HBr Syrup IP 13.5mg/5ml'. A day later, another complaint was received from Sikar regarding batch number KL-25/148 of the same drug. Both complaints pointed to symptoms like vomiting, drowsiness, anxiety, dizziness, restlessness, and unconsciousness in patients who had taken the medicine.The official said the department had formed a three-member committee to investigate the case. "This committee will submit its report soon. Necessary action will be taken in the case as per rules after the report is received," the official added.This committee comprises RMSCL executive director (quality control), executive director (logistics), and the nodal officer of the chief minister's free medicine scheme.
