Vijay fled, even second-level TVK leaders not with people: DMK MP on Karur stampede

Karur tragedy: DMK MP Kanimozhi urges political parties to prioritise safety, support grieving families, and ensure accountability for lives lost. DMK MP Kanimozhi stressed the need for political leaders to prioritise public safety and support grieving families in the aftermath of the Karur stampede during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay's rally, which claimed 41 lives. She called for accountability and criticised the politicisation of the incident. "A leader of a party leaving the spot for his own security is something that I've never seen," she said. She added that at least second-level leaders should have been present, and criticised how Vijay listened to the DMK's oral order to leave Karur. Speaking to India Today after meeting the families of those affected, Kanimozhi said many families were "torn apart," with young children losing their mother, and a mother who is hearing and speech impaired unable to express her struggle. She noted that police were ensuring conditions for her team and the public, but emphasised that political parties must also prioritise safety. "People who are grieving were looking for support or help, but the party which called for the rally, even second-level leaders, were not there. You should be with your people. This is what is taught across parties," she said. Kanimozhi added that grieving families were seeking justice and wanted those responsible held accountable. "Chief Minister Stalin gave relief, but someone has to take responsibility," she said. Responding to opposition claims of a conspiracy, she said, "Turning everything into a political opportunity is sad. Even the PM and LOP have held rallies safely. Why should the government conspire against one particular person? Why is the LOP claiming ambulances shouldn't come into a rally? Life is paramount, and if someone's life needs to be saved, move." She further noted that former Chief Minister and AIAMK general secretary, EPS had started the issue by allegedly threatening an ambulance crew. "We should take this seriously. Select the right place where everyone is safe as you are inviting people," she said.
